Spelling

Spelling at Boughton Heath Academy

Infant children learn spellings through their participation in phonics, specifically through the Floppy Phonics synthetic phonics scheme. Each week, words will be placed onto the digital learning platform SeeSaw for them to access and practice at home. These words will match the phonic learning undertaken within lessons throughout that week and also link with the reading books children are bringing home.

In junior classes, children will receive 3 dedicated spelling lessons per week in school. These sessions will have a weekly focused spelling rule that teachers will develop with the children. This will culminate with children having a weekly spelling test on Fridays. Instead of sending lists of words home to be learnt from memory, parents can now access the spelling rule to be taught alongside sample words to practice with through this website. Simply click below on the relevant year group. These words will be tested, alongside other non-seen words which also fit the rule studied.

Where there are words which do not fit a spelling rule, such as common exception words for each year group, a full word list will be sent out. Teachers will supplement the teaching of spelling by sending home occasional activities they feel may benefit a child’s study of particular words or spelling patterns.

Please speak with your child's classteacher(s) if you have any queries regarding spellings.
